The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has determined that residences within the 65+ decibel level contour map around San Diego International Airport are eligible for sound attenuation treatments to mitigate aircraft noise. The FAA has set a goal of reducing interior noise levels for San Diego residents by at least 5 decibels inside the home, providing a noticeable reduction in noise level. The Airport Authority's Quieter Home Program is the means to obtain that goal.

How is the program funded?

The FAA and the Airport Authority fund the entire project cost. The Airport Authority qualifies for and regularly applies for federal funds for the Program from the FAA's Airport Improvement Program. FAA funding is derived solely from user fees assessed on aviation, such as airline tickets, aircraft fuel sales, etc., and is not paid for with general tax dollars - a common misconception. The airport user fees pay for the Airport Authority's share of the Program cost.
